The RSPB nature reserve at Portmore Lough, located just outside the village of Glenavy, provides an ideal location for those of you who enjoy walking and wildlife. The site is fully accessible for wheelchair users. At this location you can see a wide variety of plants and animals, during the summer, butterflies, dragonflies and in the winter greylag geese, whooper swans and various wildflower. For those who enjoy bird –watching or watching the world go by, there is a hide on the Lough shore which is accessible by boardwalk from the main trail. This reserve has many facilities including – Car park – space for 14 cars, additional spaces are located outside the gates. – Toilets – Picnic area – Pier–like viewing platform, which sits at a height of almost 14 feet above meadows – A community room, which has facilities for meetings and presentations – Binocular hire – Group booking accepted – Guided walks – Educational Facilities – school groups are welcome and may take part in a variety of activities including pond dipping, bug hunting and guided walks. School Fieldwork etc. can be arranged, please contact the Warden in advance regarding this.
