The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui’

arrow Date

Friday 19th March 2010

Time

8pm

Cost

£10/£8 con

arrow Contact details

Event information

The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui is one of Brecht’s best known plays.  It is an alarming and savagely hilarious allegory of Hitler’s rise to power, in which the Fuhrer is portrayed as charismatic Chicago gangster Arturo Ui, endeavouring to seize the city’s fruit and vegetable racket from top dog Al Capone. He systematically seduces the public and eliminates his political rivals in his bid for total domination. This is political theatre at its best and most powerful.

Six actor/musicians will play over fifty characters to bring this powerful story to life in true Bruiser physical style.  Unnerving and scathing; the battle for political status and the corruption of power still fills our newspapers in 2010.  When credits crunch, to whom do we turn?  Arturo Ui offers protection and freedom - at a very large price.

A doorway. A stairwell. A story. Two women: one desperate to cross over the threshold: the other desperate to escape.

What is it on the other side that makes 80 year old Maggie want so badly to go in? What is it that has terrified Susan into packing up and leaving? And why does the story of the mysterious Helena Blunden still hold them both there?

Based on a fascinating local ghost story, the Haunting of Helena Blunden features live music, inventive choreography and special effects.

Set in 1980's Belfast, in a converted Linen Mill, it has more twists and turns than the yarn winding its way round the spindle. Just when you think its time to relax, sit back and breathe easy, the breath is knocked right out of you
